ARIA : quand l'IA et la RA font la paire !

ARGO is revolutionizing our relationship with technology through ARIA (Augmented Intelligent Reality), an innovative concept that refuses to oppose artificial intelligence to augmented reality in order to better merge them. Rather than viewing these technologies as competitors, ARGO sees them as complementary, transforming augmented reality into an intuitive visual interface for artificial intelligence in our everyday environment. Through its Spatial AR technology, the company creates "Smart Spaces" where contextual information adapts in real-time to user needs, whether in industry for optimizing maintenance, in retail for personalizing customer experience, or in tourism for enhancing discovery. ARIA thus embodies a vision of the future where advanced technologies and ease of use become one, making accessible to all, on simple smartphones or tablets, what seemed to be science fiction not long ago.

"Extended reality is dead. Welcome to artificial intelligence now!" We've all heard this phrase a good thousand times in recent months, haven't we? But at ARGO, we see things differently: why choose when we can combine? Our mission: to marry these two worlds to create solutions that truly change the game for businesses and individuals.

Artificial Intelligence is not just ChatGPT or images generated by Midjourney! At its core, it's a whole ecosystem that mimics different facets of our human intelligence: perceiving, recognising, reacting, planning, and solving problems.

And when AI wants to talk to us, how will it do so? What will be the ideal interface between our intelligent digital world and us, poor humans? Unsurprisingly, augmented reality (AR) will play a leading role in everything related to visualising our environment.

That's how our concept of ARIA: Intelligent Augmented Reality was born. Simple, effective, and full of potential!

A Quick Glimpse into the Future

Our ARIA concept didn't come out of nowhere. It results from numerous experiences where we noticed that Augmented Reality and Artificial Intelligence do not just coexist — they are made for each other!

We are slowly beginning to see the idea that augmented reality is becoming both the eyes and the canvas of artificial intelligence. Not a bad concept, right?

Let's take a concrete example with Ray-Ban Meta glasses. Today, they are "smart" only thanks to their camera and audio system, but the roadmap is clear: soon, they will incorporate real augmented reality screens.

Already, thanks to multimodal AI, these glasses can recognise everything they see — a particular rock, an island in the distance, a piece of clothing, or even translate a sign into a foreign language. The cameras literally become the eyes of Meta's AI (when we ask them to "look," of course).

These glasses enrich our reality by providing us with useful information: "It's granite", "It's Porquerolles Island", or by instantly translating a menu into Japanese. The glasses thus become the canvas on which AI paints its knowledge.

For now, we are being whispered to. But very soon (keep an eye on Meta Connect in September!), we will talk about holograms, floating tags, 3D videos, avatars that accompany us... A whole new form of augmented reality, boosted by artificial intelligence!

Meta is already giving us a glimpse of its future AR glasses, and honestly, it makes you want to see more!

In this not-so-distant future, the main challenge for multimodal AI will be that it understands the world in general, but not necessarily the specifics of each environment. If you want an AI that really understands your business, it will need to be specifically trained for that. Like a new employee, in a way, but one that learns much faster!

This is where companies like ARGO come into play. We support businesses in this transition because our dual expertise in AI and AR allows us to create concrete and impactful applications, whether for internal employees (imagine a workshop where each machine is "explained" in AR) or for your customers (think of a store where each product tells its story).

AR and AI: Already a Beautiful Love Story

Let's return to the present for a moment after this little journey to the future. How are augmented reality and artificial intelligence already teaming up today?

These past few months have been rich in innovations that bring AI closer to our daily lives: Google's Gemini that understands everything it sees, Project Astra which reminds us of the movie "Her", Meta's Llama 3 that converses like a human, OpenAI's GPT-4o that deeply analyses images, and Apple Intelligence that integrates everywhere into our devices.

On the extended reality side, even if perfect AR glasses do not exist yet, we already have quite impressive virtual and mixed reality headsets: Microsoft Hololens, Magic Leap, Pico, Meta Quest, or the latest addition, Apple Vision Pro.

These devices, despite their still high prices and imperfect ergonomics, already allow us to experience experiences that combine AI and mixed reality — another way to speak of augmented reality seen through a headset that understands space.

For example, solutions developed for Microsoft Hololens enable industries to optimise their training or maintenance operations by understanding the work environment.

But why limit ourselves to expensive headsets? A more accessible approach is to use devices that everyone already owns: smartphones and tablets! It is the democratisation of these technologies that will enable their massive adoption.

This is what is called Web AR (augmented reality directly in the browser), and it is exactly here that ARGO has succeeded in merging augmented reality and artificial intelligence for the general public.

ARGO ARIA: Spaces That Become Smart

Let's revisit our industrial example: imagine an AI fed by the detailed mapping of machine rooms, receiving real-time data from IoT sensors, and having digested all the technical manuals for each piece of equipment.

This AI could then create on-the-fly personalised training for each technician, suggest preventive maintenance interventions, or alert about imminent risks. In short, Smart Spaces where advanced AR meets AI. And the same principle applies equally to a tourist site as to a store!

This is exactly what we have realised with the launch of our Spatial AR.

With this technology, any company can now digitise a space by filming a simple video, visualise a 3D mesh of that space in ARGO's online studio, easily add augmented reality elements, and then share the experience on any smartphone or tablet. And the cherry on top: these projects can incorporate an AI layer that multiplies their possibilities!

These experiences are not limited to industry. In retail, for example, we have developed a real-time wine recommendation system that uses spatial recognition, artificial intelligence, and augmented reality. Gone are the long minutes of hesitation in front of the wine aisle!

At ARGO, we believe this is just the beginning of a grand adventure! This is why we are exploring all sorts of new interactions between AR and AI, not only to understand space but also to create intelligent avatars that accompany us.

In the coming months, we will unveil new initiatives that will further strengthen this collaboration under the banner of ARGO ARIA (Intelligent Augmented Reality) — a fusion of AR and AI in service of businesses and their customers.
